When our client in Exton, PA, reached out to us, they wanted a way to access their backyard area from outside. However, their property had a steep slope, so we had to build retaining walls to make that happen. So, our team got to work! We started this project by prepping the area, which involved clearing any existing vegetation and ensuring proper grading to create a solid foundation for where the walls would go. Once everything was ready, we built tiered retaining walls to accommodate the severe slope. Then, to connect them, we installed outdoor steps and a paver walkway between them. Now, that previously unusable sloped land is being maximized, allowing our client to safely reach their backyard.

Preparation Was the First Step of the Retaining Wall Project

Our client had a severe slope on their property but wanted to make their backyard accessible from the outside, making retaining walls necessary. But first, we had to prep the area for this project. Preparation was extensive and involved clearing the land of vegetation and debris to ensure there weren't any obstructions. After that, we graded the land to establish a solid foundation for where the walls were to go. That way, they would maintain their structural integrity for years to come.

Our Team Built Tiered Retaining Walls for Our Client's Sloped Yard

Once preparation for this project was complete, our team moved forward with building tiered retaining walls. Due to the slope, multi-layered walls were necessary to make it easier and safer to navigate. We installed a wall at the base of the slope, followed by another one to create a landing that leads to their backyard. Durable concrete blocks were used and stacked a few feet tall so they would remain sturdy and effectively do their job, which is to hold back the soil and flatten out the land.

We Installed Outdoor Steps to Connect the Different Retaining Wall Elevations

The final step of this project was to connect the different retaining wall elevations. To do this, we installed outdoor steps and a paver walkway between the two sets, along with one at the top leading to their fenced-in backyard. The materials used for these features match the retaining walls, creating a cohesive look across them. They also drastically improve flow and accessibility, as the staggered steps ensure it isn't too steep for our client to navigate safely. With everything complete, they now have the ability to get to their backyard from the outside via land that was previously unusable due to its drastic slope!

Common materials used to build our walkways include concrete pavers and natural stones like Pennsylvania bluestone and travertine.
