Our team at Countywide Landscape recently worked with a homeowner in Malvern, PA, for a beautiful patio transformation project. We began the project with a retaining wall installation to create a nice, level ground for the patio. It doubled as a seating wall for the patio, which we installed using pavers that blended nicely with the stonework of the retaining wall. A fire pit was also installed on the patio. Finally, we did some finishing touches by installing sod around the patio and retaining wall. On one end of the retaining wall, a landscape bed was added with a stone border, mulch, and plants. With these new installations, their outdoor space was transformed into a beautiful and functional oasis where they could relax.

The first step of this project was the installation of a retaining wall and patio.

The retaining wall and patio installations were the starting points for this project. Our client had a beautiful canvas of outdoor space on their property, but there was a slight slope that needed fixing. We started by building a retaining wall to create a flat and even ground for the patio, which was connected to a wooden deck. This retaining wall had a U-shape, which doubled as a seating wall with an opening to provide access to the patio. Our team used blocks for this wall to ensure its durability while adding a nice, rustic touch to the space.

Once the retaining wall was installed, we constructed a patio using pavers. These pavers provided a nice contrast to the rough texture of the retaining wall and added charming streaks of brown and gray hues. Their patio had an oval shape to introduce dimension and elongation to our client's wide backyard. To create a seamless flow of movement in their outdoor space, we built steps on the other side of the patio using the same material as the retaining wall that led to their wooden deck.

Fire Pit Installation for the New Patio

Fire pit on a patio in Malvern, PA.

Once the patio and retaining wall were done, the next step was to install a fire pit. We built a quaint, round fire pit on the patio using stones that matched the retaining wall for a cohesive look. This fire feature is placed on the other end of the patio close to the retaining wall, so the fire pit can be enjoyed while sitting on the wall!

Both wood-burning and gas-burning fire pits can be installed!

We gave the space some finishing touches with sod, a landscape bed, mulch, and plant installations.

The final step of this project was to add softscaping features to tie their new outdoor space together. We started by installing sod, which surrounded the entire patio and deck area, adding a lush touch of green to their backyard. Our crew also added rocks between their new lawn and patio to make the transition between the spaces smoother.

At the end of the retaining wall, we installed a landscape bed with a stone border to surround the mulched area. The landscape bed has black mulch to add a stark contrast of color against the light shades of stonework in their retaining wall. We also added plantings to the landscape bed for a nice, finishing touch!
